Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Mateo 26, 14-25
En aquel tiempo, uno de los Doce, llamado Judas Iscariote, fue a ver a los sumos sacerdotes y les dijo: “¿Cuánto me dan si les entrego a Jesús?” Ellos quedaron en darle treinta monedas de plata. Y desde ese momento andaba buscando una oportunidad para entregárselo.
El primer día de la fiesta de los panes Ázimos, los discípulos se acercaron a Jesús y le preguntaron: “¿Dónde quieres que te preparemos la cena de Pascua?” El respondió: “Vayan a la ciudad, a casa de fulano y díganle: ‘El Maestro dice: Mi hora está ya cerca. Voy a celebrar la Pascua con mis discípulos en tu casa’ ”. Ellos hicieron lo que Jesús les había ordenado y prepararon la cena de Pascua.
Al atardecer, se sentó a la mesa con los Doce y mientras cenaban, les dijo: “Yo les aseguro que uno de ustedes va a entregarme”. Ellos se pusieron muy tristes y comenzaron a preguntarle uno por uno: “¿Acaso soy yo, Señor?” El respondió: “El que moja su pan en el mismo plato que yo, ése va a entregarme. Porque el Hijo del hombre va a morir, como está escrito de él; pero ¡ay de aquel por quien el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado! Más le valiera a ese hombre no haber nacido”. Entonces preguntó Judas, el que lo iba a entregar: “¿Acaso soy yo, Maestro?” Jesús le respondió: “Tú lo has dicho”.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Lucas 4, 16-21
En aquel tiempo, Jesús fue a Nazaret, donde se había criado. Entró en la sinagoga, como era su costumbre hacerlo los sábados, y se levantó para hacer la lectura. Se le dio el volumen del profeta Isaías, lo desenrolló y encontró el pasaje en que estaba escrito: El Espíritu del Señor está sobre mí, porque me ha ungido para llevar a los pobres la buena nueva, para anunciar la liberación a los cautivos y la curación a los ciegos, para dar libertad a los oprimidos y proclamar el año de gracia del Señor.
Enrolló el volumen, lo devolvió al encargado y se sentó. Los ojos de todos los asistentes a la sinagoga estaban fijos en él. Entonces comenzó a hablar, diciendo: “Hoy mismo se ha cumplido este pasaje de la Escritura que ustedes acaban de oír”.

Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew 26, 14-25
At that time, one of the Twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said to them: “How much will you give me if I hand Jesus over to you?” They agreed to give him thirty pieces of silver. And from that moment on, he began to look for an opportunity to hand him over.
On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked him: “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?” He answered: “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him: ‘The Teacher says: My time is near. I will celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’” They did as Jesus had ordered and prepared the Passover meal.
When it was evening, he sat at table with the Twelve, and while they were eating, he said: “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” They became very sad and began to ask him one by one: “Surely it is not I, Lord?” He replied: “The one who dips his bread in the same dish with me will betray me. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.” Then Judas, the one who would betray him, asked: “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” Jesus answered: “You have said so.”

Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke 4, 16-21
At that time, Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered the synagogue, as was his custom on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled it and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim freedom to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to speak, saying: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 18, 1—19, 42
En aquel tiempo, Jesús fue con sus discípulos al otro lado del torrente Cedrón, donde había un huerto, y entraron allí él y sus discípulos. Judas, el traidor, conocía también el sitio, porque Jesús se reunía a menudo allí con sus discípulos.
Entonces Judas tomó un batallón de soldados y guardias de los sumos sacerdotes y de los fariseos y entró en el huerto con linternas, antorchas y armas.
Jesús, sabiendo todo lo que iba a suceder, se adelantó y les dijo: “¿A quién buscan?” Le contestaron: “A Jesús, el nazareno”. Les dijo Jesús: “Yo soy”. Estaba también con ellos Judas, el traidor. Al decirles ‘Yo soy’, retrocedieron y cayeron a tierra. Jesús les volvió a preguntar: “¿A quién buscan?” Ellos dijeron: “A Jesús, el nazareno”. Jesús contestó: “Les he dicho que soy yo. Si me buscan a mí, dejen que éstos se vayan”. Así se cumplió lo que Jesús había dicho: ‘No he perdido a ninguno de los que me diste’.
Entonces Simón Pedro, que llevaba una espada, la sacó e hirió a un criado del sumo sacerdote y le cortó la oreja derecha. Este criado se llamaba Malco. Dijo entonces Jesús a Pedro: “Mete la espada en la vaina. ¿No voy a beber el cáliz que me ha dado mi Padre?”
El batallón, su comandante y los criados de los judíos apresaron a Jesús, lo ataron y lo llevaron primero ante Anás, porque era suegro de Caifás, sumo sacerdote aquel año. Caifás era el que había dado a los judíos este consejo: ‘Conviene que muera un solo hombre por el pueblo’.
Simón Pedro y otro discípulo iban siguiendo a Jesús. Este discípulo era conocido del sumo sacerdote y entró con Jesús en el palacio del sumo sacerdote, mientras Pedro se quedaba fuera, junto a la puerta. Salió el otro discípulo, el conocido del sumo sacerdote, habló con la portera e hizo entrar a Pedro. La portera dijo entonces a Pedro: “¿No eres tú también uno de los discípulos de ese hombre?” Él dijo: “No lo soy”. Los criados y los guardias habían encendido un brasero, porque hacía frío, y se calentaban. También Pedro estaba con ellos de pie, calentándose.
El sumo sacerdote interrogó a Jesús acerca de sus discípulos y de su doctrina. Jesús le contestó: “Yo he hablado abiertamente al mundo y he enseñado continuamente en la sinagoga y en el templo, donde se reúnen todos los judíos, y no he dicho nada a escondidas. ¿Por qué me interrogas a mí? Interroga a los que me han oído, sobre lo que les he hablado. Ellos saben lo que he dicho”.
Apenas dijo esto, uno de los guardias le dio una bofetada a Jesús, diciéndole: “¿Así contestas al sumo sacerdote?” Jesús le respondió: “Si he faltado al hablar, demuestra en qué he faltado; pero si he hablado como se debe, ¿por qué me pegas?” Entonces Anás lo envió atado a Caifás, el sumo sacerdote.
Simón Pedro estaba de pie, calentándose, y le dijeron: “¿No eres tú también uno de sus discípulos?” Él lo negó diciendo: “No lo soy”. Uno de los criados del sumo sacerdote, pariente de aquel a quien Pedro le había cortado la oreja, le dijo: “¿Qué no te vi yo con él en el huerto?” Pedro volvió a negarlo y enseguida cantó un gallo.
Llevaron a Jesús de casa de Caifás al pretorio. Era muy de mañana y ellos no entraron en el palacio para no incurrir en impureza y poder así comer la cena de Pascua.
Salió entonces Pilato a donde estaban ellos y les dijo: “¿De qué acusan a este hombre?” Le contestaron: “Si éste no fuera un malhechor, no te lo hubiéramos traído”. Pilato les dijo: “Pues llévenselo y júzguenlo según su ley”. Los judíos le respondieron: “No estamos autorizados para dar muerte a nadie”. Así se cumplió lo que había dicho Jesús, indicando de qué muerte iba a morir.
Entró otra vez Pilato en el pretorio, llamó a Jesús y le dijo: “¿Eres tú el rey de los judíos?” Jesús le contestó: “¿Eso lo preguntas por tu cuenta o te lo han dicho otros?” Pilato le respondió: “¿Acaso soy yo judío? Tu pueblo y los sumos sacerdotes te han entregado a mí. ¿Qué es lo que has hecho?” Jesús le contestó: “Mi Reino no es de este mundo. Si mi Reino fuera de este mundo, mis servidores habrían luchado para que no cayera yo en manos de los judíos. Pero mi Reino no es de aquí”. Pilato le dijo: “¿Conque tú eres rey?” Jesús le contestó: “Tú lo has dicho. Soy rey. Yo nací y vine al mundo para ser testigo de la verdad. Todo el que es de la verdad, escucha mi voz”. Pilato le dijo: “¿Y qué es la verdad?”
Dicho esto, salió otra vez a donde estaban los judíos y les dijo: “No encuentro en él ninguna culpa. Entre ustedes es costumbre que por Pascua ponga en libertad a un preso. ¿Quieren que les suelte al rey de los judíos?” Pero todos ellos gritaron: “¡No, a ése no! ¡A Barrabás!” (El tal Barrabás era un bandido).
Entonces Pilato tomó a Jesús y lo mandó azotar. Los soldados trenzaron una corona de espinas, se la pusieron en la cabeza, le echaron encima un manto color púrpura, y acercándose a él, le decían: “¡Viva el rey de los judíos!”, y le daban de bofetadas.
Pilato salió otra vez afuera y les dijo: “Aquí lo traigo para que sepan que no encuentro en él ninguna culpa”. Salió, pues, Jesús, llevando la corona de espinas y el manto color púrpura. Pilato les dijo: “Aquí está el hombre”. Cuando lo vieron los sumos sacerdotes y sus servidores, gritaron: “¡Crucifícalo, crucifícalo!” Pilato les dijo: “Llévenselo ustedes y crucifíquenlo, porque yo no encuentro culpa en él”. Los judíos le contestaron: “Nosotros tenemos una ley y según esa ley tiene que morir, porque se ha declarado Hijo de Dios”.
Cuando Pilato oyó estas palabras, se asustó aún más, y entrando otra vez en el pretorio, dijo a Jesús: “¿De dónde eres tú?” Pero Jesús no le respondió. Pilato le dijo entonces: “¿A mí no me hablas? ¿No sabes que tengo autoridad para soltarte y autoridad para crucificarte?” Jesús le contestó: “No tendrías ninguna autoridad sobre mí, si no te la hubieran dado de lo alto. Por eso, el que me ha entregado a ti tiene un pecado mayor”.
Desde ese momento Pilato trataba de soltarlo, pero los judíos gritaban: “¡Si sueltas a ése, no eres amigo del César!; porque todo el que pretende ser rey, es enemigo del César”. Al oír estas palabras, Pilato sacó a Jesús y lo sentó en el tribunal, en el sitio que llaman “el Enlosado” (en hebreo Gábbata). Era el día de la preparación de la Pascua, hacia el mediodía. Y dijo Pilato a los judíos: “Aquí tienen a su rey”. Ellos gritaron: “¡Fuera, fuera! ¡Crucifícalo!” Pilato les dijo: “¿A su rey voy a crucificar?” Contestaron los sumos sacerdotes: “No tenemos más rey que el César”. Entonces se lo entregó para que lo crucificaran.
Tomaron a Jesús, y él, cargando con la cruz se dirigió hacia el sitio llamado “la Calavera” (que en hebreo se dice Gólgota), donde lo crucificaron, y con él a otros dos, uno de cada lado, y en medio Jesús. Pilato mandó escribir un letrero y ponerlo encima de la cruz; en él estaba escrito: ‘Jesús el nazareno, el rey de los judíos’. Leyeron el letrero muchos judíos, porque estaba cerca el lugar donde crucificaron a Jesús y estaba escrito en hebreo, latín y griego. Entonces los sumos sacerdotes de los judíos le dijeron a Pilato: “No escribas: ‘El rey de los judíos’, sino: ‘Éste ha dicho: Soy rey de los judíos’ ”. Pilato les contestó: “Lo escrito, escrito está”.
Cuando crucificaron a Jesús, los soldados cogieron su ropa e hicieron cuatro partes, una para cada soldado, y apartaron la túnica. Era una túnica sin costura, tejida toda de una pieza de arriba a abajo. Por eso se dijeron: “No la rasguemos, sino echemos suertes para ver a quién le toca”. Así se cumplió lo que dice la Escritura: Se repartieron mi ropa y echaron a suerte mi túnica. Y eso hicieron los soldados.
Junto a la cruz de Jesús estaban su madre, la hermana de su madre, María la de Cleofás, y María Magdalena. Al ver a su madre y junto a ella al discípulo que tanto quería, Jesús dijo a su madre: “Mujer, ahí está tu hijo”. Luego dijo al discípulo: “Ahí está tu madre”. Y desde aquella hora el discípulo se la llevó a vivir con él.
Después de esto, sabiendo Jesús que todo había llegado a su término, para que se cumpliera la Escritura dijo: “Tengo sed”. Había allí un jarro lleno de vinagre. Los soldados sujetaron una esponja empapada en vinagre a una caña de hisopo y se la acercaron a la boca. Jesús probó el vinagre y dijo: “Todo está cumplido”, e inclinando la cabeza, entregó el espíritu.
Aquí se arrodillan todos y se hace una breve pausa.
Entonces, los judíos, como era el día de la preparación de la Pascua, para que los cuerpos de los ajusticiados no se quedaran en la cruz el sábado, porque aquel sábado era un día muy solemne, pidieron a Pilato que les quebraran las piernas y los quitaran de la cruz. Fueron los soldados, le quebraron las piernas a uno y luego al otro de los que habían sido crucificados con él. Pero al llegar a Jesús, viendo que ya había muerto, no le quebraron las piernas, sino que uno de los soldados le traspasó el costado con una lanza e inmediatamente salió sangre y agua.
El que vio da testimonio de esto y su testimonio es verdadero y él sabe que dice la verdad, para que también ustedes crean. Esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que dice la Escritura: No le quebrarán ningún hueso; y en otro lugar la Escritura dice: Mirarán al que traspasaron.
Después de esto, José de Arimatea, que era discípulo de Jesús, pero oculto por miedo a los judíos, pidió a Pilato que lo dejara llevarse el cuerpo de Jesús. Y Pilato lo autorizó. Él fue entonces y se llevó el cuerpo.
Llegó también Nicodemo, el que había ido a verlo de noche, y trajo unas cien libras de una mezcla de mirra y áloe.
Tomaron el cuerpo de Jesús y lo envolvieron en lienzos con esos aromas, según se acostumbra enterrar entre los judíos. Había un huerto en el sitio donde lo crucificaron, y en el huerto, un sepulcro nuevo, donde nadie había sido enterrado todavía. Y como para los judíos era el día de la preparación de la Pascua y el sepulcro estaba cerca, allí pusieron a Jesús.

Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint John 18, 1—19, 42
At that time, Jesus went with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and he and his disciples entered it. Judas, the betrayer, also knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples.
Then Judas took a detachment of soldiers and guards from the chief priests and the Pharisees and entered the garden with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Jesus, knowing everything that was going to happen to him, stepped forward and said to them: “Whom are you looking for?” They answered him: “Jesus the Nazorean.” Jesus said to them: “I am.” Judas, the betrayer, was also with them. When he said to them, “I am,” they turned back and fell to the ground. So he again asked them: “Whom are you looking for?” They said: “Jesus the Nazorean.” Jesus answered: “I told you that I am. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.” This was to fulfill what he had said: “I have not lost any of those you gave me.”
Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter: “Put your sword into its sheath. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”
The detachment, its commander, and the Jewish guards seized Jesus, bound him, and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it was better that one man should die for the people.
Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was known to the high priest and entered the courtyard of the high priest with Jesus, while Peter stood outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the gatekeeper, and brought Peter in. The maid at the gate said to Peter: “Are you not also one of this man’s disciples?” He said: “I am not.” Now the servants and guards had made a charcoal fire, because it was cold, and they were standing and warming themselves. Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. Jesus answered him: “I have spoken openly to the world. I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews gather, and I have said nothing in secret. Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said.”
When he had said this, one of the guards standing nearby struck Jesus, saying: “Is that how you answer the high priest?” Jesus answered him: “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to what is wrong; but if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?” Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him: “Are you not also one of his disciples?” He denied it and said: “I am not.” One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said: “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” Peter again denied it, and immediately a rooster crowed.
Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the praetorium. It was early morning, and they themselves did not enter the praetorium, so as not to be defiled, but to be able to eat the Passover.
So Pilate went out to them and said: “What accusation do you bring against this man?” They answered him: “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.” Pilate said to them: “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews replied: “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.” This was to fulfill what Jesus had said, indicating the kind of death he was to die.
Pilate went back into the praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him: “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus answered: “Do you say this on your own, or have others told you about me?” Pilate answered: “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered: “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight so that I might not be handed over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate said to him: “So you are a king?” Jesus answered: “You say that I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him: “What is truth?”
After he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and told them: “I find no guilt in him. But you have a custom that I release one prisoner for you at Passover. Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?” They cried out again: “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a bandit.
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe. They came up to him, saying: “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him repeatedly.
Pilate went out again and said to them: “Look, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them: “Behold, the man!” When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out: “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them: “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” The Jews answered him: “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die, because he has made himself the Son of God.”
When Pilate heard these words, he was even more afraid. He entered the praetorium again and said to Jesus: “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. So Pilate said to him: “Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” Jesus answered him: “You would have no authority over me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out: “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king sets himself against Caesar.” When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement (in Hebrew, Gabbatha). Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover; it was about noon. He said to the Jews: “Behold your king!” They cried out: “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them: “Shall I crucify your king?” The chief priests answered: “We have no king but Caesar.” So he handed him over to them to be crucified.
So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Skull (which in Hebrew is called Golgotha), where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered: “What I have written, I have written.”
When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic. But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, so they said to one another: “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says: “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things.
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother: “Woman, behold your son!” Then he said to the disciple: “Behold your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture): “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said: “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Here all kneel and pause briefly.
Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” And again another Scripture says: “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (though secretly for fear of the Jews), asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.
Nicodemus also came, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds.
They took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Mateo 28, 1-10
Transcurrido el sábado, al amanecer del primer día de la semana, María Magdalena y la otra María fueron a ver el sepulcro. De pronto se produjo un gran temblor, porque el ángel del Señor bajó del cielo y acercándose al sepulcro, hizo rodar la piedra que lo tapaba y se sentó encima de ella. Su rostro brillaba como el relámpago y sus vestiduras eran blancas como la nieve. Los guardias, atemorizados ante él, se pusieron a temblar y se quedaron como muertos. El ángel se dirigió a las mujeres y les dijo: “No teman. Ya sé que buscan a Jesús, el crucificado. No está aquí; ha resucitado, como lo había dicho. Vengan a ver el lugar donde lo habían puesto. Y ahora, vayan de prisa a decir a sus discípulos: ‘Ha resucitado de entre los muertos e irá delante de ustedes a Galilea; allá lo verán’. Eso es todo”.
Ellas se alejaron a toda prisa del sepulcro, y llenas de temor y de gran alegría, corrieron a dar la noticia a los discípulos. Pero de repente Jesús les salió al encuentro y las saludó. Ellas se le acercaron, le abrazaron los pies y lo adoraron. Entonces les dijo Jesús: “No tengan miedo. Vayan a decir a mis hermanos que se dirijan a Galilea. Allá me verán”.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 20, 1-9
El primer día después del sábado, estando todavía oscuro, fue María Magdalena al sepulcro y vio removida la piedra que lo cerraba. Echó a correr, llegó a la casa donde estaban Simón Pedro y el otro discípulo, a quien Jesús amaba, y les dijo: “Se han llevado del sepulcro al Señor y no sabemos dónde lo habrán puesto”. Salieron Pedro y el otro discípulo camino del sepulcro. Los dos iban corriendo juntos, pero el otro discípulo corrió más aprisa que Pedro y llegó primero al sepulcro, e inclinándose, miró los lienzos puestos en el suelo, pero no entró.
En eso llegó también Simón Pedro, que lo venía siguiendo, y entró en el sepulcro. Contempló los lienzos puestos en el suelo y el sudario, que había estado sobre la cabeza de Jesús, puesto no con los lienzos en el suelo, sino doblado en sitio aparte. Entonces entró también el otro discípulo, el que había llegado primero al sepulcro, y vio y creyó, porque hasta entonces no habían entendido las Escrituras, según las cuales Jesús debía resucitar de entre los muertos.

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone that covered it and sat upon it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. The guards, terrified at his presence, trembled and became like dead men. The angel said to the women: “Do not be afraid. I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, as he said. Come and see the place where they had laid him. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him.’ That is all.”

Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint John 20, 1-9
On the first day after the Sabbath, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from it. She ran and went to the house where Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, were, and said to them: “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Peter and the other disciple went out and made their way to the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and reached the tomb first; and bending down, he saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but he did not go in.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in; and he saw and believed, for until then they had not understood the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.

Después de escuchar las palabras del ángel, las mujeres se alejaron a toda prisa del sepulcro, y llenas de temor y de gran alegría, corrieron a dar la noticia a los discípulos. Pero de repente Jesús les salió al encuentro y las saludó. Ellas se le acercaron, le abrazaron los pies y lo adoraron. Entonces les dijo Jesús: “No tengan miedo. Vayan a decir a mis hermanos que se dirijan a Galilea. Allá me verán”.
Mientras las mujeres iban de camino, algunos soldados de la guardia fueron a la ciudad y dieron parte a los sumos sacerdotes de todo lo ocurrido. Estos se reunieron con los ancianos, y juntos acordaron dar una fuerte suma de dinero a los soldados, con estas instrucciones: “Digan: ‘Durante la noche, estando nosotros dormidos, llegaron sus discípulos y se robaron el cuerpo’. Y si esto llega a oídos del gobernador, nosotros nos arreglaremos con él y les evitaremos cualquier complicación”. Ellos tomaron el dinero y actuaron conforme a las instrucciones recibidas. Esta versión de los soldados se ha ido difundiendo entre los judíos hasta el día de hoy.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 20, 11-18
El día de la resurrección, María se había quedado llorando junto al sepulcro de Jesús. Sin dejar de llorar, se asomó al sepulcro y vio dos ángeles vestidos de blanco, sentados en el lugar donde había estado el cuerpo de Jesús, uno en la cabecera y el otro junto a los pies. Los ángeles le preguntaron: “¿Por qué estás llorando, mujer?” Ella les contestó: “Porque se han llevado a mi Señor y no sé dónde lo habrán puesto”.
Dicho esto, miró hacia atrás y vio a Jesús de pie, pero no sabía que era Jesús. Entonces él le dijo: “Mujer, ¿por qué estás llorando? ¿A quién buscas?” Ella, creyendo que era el jardinero, le respondió: “Señor, si tú te lo llevaste, dime dónde lo has puesto”. Jesús le dijo: “¡María!” Ella se volvió y exclamó: “¡Rabuní!”, que en hebreo significa ‘maestro’. Jesús le dijo: “Déjame ya, porque todavía no he subido al Padre. Ve a decir a mis hermanos: ‘Subo a mi Padre y su Padre, a mi Dios y su Dios’ ”. María Magdalena se fue a ver a los discípulos para decirles que había visto al Señor y para darles su mensaje.

After hearing the words of the angel, the women departed quickly from the tomb, filled with fear and great joy, and ran to bring the news to the disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them and greeted them. They approached him, embraced his feet, and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them: “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. They assembled with the elders and agreed to give a large sum of money to the soldiers, instructing them: “Say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” They took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

On the day of the resurrection, Mary remained weeping outside the tomb of Jesus. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels dressed in white, seated where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head and the other at the feet. The angels said to her: “Woman, why are you weeping?” She answered them: “They have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have laid him.”
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her: “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said to him: “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him.” Jesus said to her: “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her: “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and reported what he had told her.

El mismo día de la resurrección, iban dos de los discípulos hacia un pueblo llamado Emaús, situado a unos once kilómetros de Jerusalén, y comentaban todo lo que había sucedido. Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús se les acercó y comenzó a caminar con ellos; pero los ojos de los dos discípulos estaban velados y no lo reconocieron. El les preguntó: “¿De qué cosas vienen hablando, tan llenos de tristeza?”
Uno de ellos, llamado Cleofás, le respondió: “¿Eres tú el único forastero que no sabe lo que ha sucedido estos días en Jerusalén?” El les preguntó: “¿Qué cosa?” Ellos le respondieron: “Lo de Jesús el nazareno, que era un profeta poderoso en obras y palabras, ante Dios y ante todo el pueblo. Cómo los sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes lo entregaron para que lo condenaran a muerte, y lo crucificaron. Nosotros esperábamos que él sería el libertador de Israel, y sin embargo, han pasado ya tres días desde que estas cosas sucedieron. Es cierto que algunas mujeres de nuestro grupo nos han desconcertado, pues fueron de madrugada al sepulcro, no encontraron el cuerpo y llegaron contando que se les habían aparecido unos ángeles, que les dijeron que estaba vivo. Algunos de nuestros compañeros fueron al sepulcro y hallaron todo como habían dicho las mujeres, pero a él no lo vieron”.
Entonces Jesús les dijo: “¡Qué insensatos son ustedes y qué duros de corazón para creer todo lo anunciado por los profetas! ¿Acaso no era necesario que el Mesías padeciera todo esto y así entrara en su gloria?” Y comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo con todos los profetas, les explicó todos los pasajes de la Escritura que se referían a él. Ya cerca del pueblo a donde se dirigían, él hizo como que iba más lejos; pero ellos le insistieron, diciendo: “Quédate con nosotros, porque ya es tarde y pronto va a oscurecer”. Y entró para quedarse con ellos. Cuando estaban a la mesa, tomó un pan, pronunció la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio. Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero él se les desapareció. Y ellos se decían el uno al otro: “¡Con razón nuestro corazón ardía, mientras nos hablaba por el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras!” Se levantaron inmediatamente y regresaron a Jerusalén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once con sus compañeros, los cuales les dijeron: “De veras ha resucitado el Señor y se le ha aparecido a Simón”. Entonces ellos contaron lo que les había pasado por el camino y cómo lo habían reconocido al partir el pan.

Cuando los dos discípulos regresaron de Emaús y llegaron al sitio donde estaban reunidos los apóstoles, les contaron lo que les había pasado en el camino y cómo habían reconocido a Jesús al partir el pan. Mientras hablaban de esas cosas, se presentó Jesús en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz esté con ustedes”. Ellos, desconcertados y llenos de temor, creían ver un fantasma. Pero él les dijo: “No teman; soy yo. ¿Por qué se espantan? ¿Por qué surgen dudas en su interior? Miren mis manos y mis pies. Soy yo en persona. Tóquenme y convénzanse: un fantasma no tiene ni carne ni huesos, como ven que tengo yo”. Y les mostró las manos y los pies. Pero como ellos no acababan de creer de pura alegría y seguían atónitos, les dijo: “¿Tienen aquí algo de comer?” Le ofrecieron un trozo de pescado asado; él lo tomó y se puso a comer delante de ellos. Después les dijo: “Lo que ha sucedido es aquello de que les hablaba yo, cuando aún estaba con ustedes: que tenía que cumplirse todo lo que estaba escrito de mí en la ley de Moisés, en los profetas y en los salmos”. Entonces les abrió el entendimiento para que comprendieran las Escrituras y les dijo: “Está escrito que el Mesías tenía que padecer y había de resucitar de entre los muertos al tercer día, y que en su nombre se había de predicar a todas las naciones, comenzando por Jerusalén, la necesidad de volverse a Dios y el perdón de los pecados. Ustedes son testigos de esto”.

On that same day, the day of the resurrection, two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking about all that had happened. While they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and began to walk with them; but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him. He asked them: “What are you discussing as you walk along, looking so sad?”
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply: “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?” He replied to them: “What things?” They said to him: “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazorean, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him. But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive. Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.”
And he said to them: “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the Scriptures. As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther. But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?” So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the Eleven and those with them, who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

When the two disciples returned from Emmaus and arrived where the apostles were gathered, they told what had happened on the road and how they had recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them.
He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things.”

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 21, 1-14
En aquel tiempo, Jesús se les apareció otra vez a los discípulos junto al lago de Tiberíades. Se les apareció de esta manera: Estaban juntos Simón Pedro, Tomás (llamado el Gemelo), Natanael (el de Caná de Galilea), los hijos de Zebedeo y otros dos discípulos. Simón Pedro les dijo: “Voy a pescar”. Ellos le respondieron: “También nosotros vamos contigo”. Salieron y se embarcaron, pero aquella noche no pescaron nada.
Estaba amaneciendo, cuando Jesús se apareció en la orilla, pero los discípulos no lo reconocieron. Jesús les dijo: “Muchachos, ¿han pescado algo?” Ellos contestaron: “No”. Entonces él les dijo: “Echen la red a la derecha de la barca y encontrarán peces”. Así lo hicieron, y luego ya no podían jalar la red por tantos pescados. Entonces el discípulo a quien amaba Jesús le dijo a Pedro: “Es el Señor”. Tan pronto como Simón Pedro oyó decir que era el Señor, se anudó a la cintura la túnica, pues se la había quitado, y se tiró al agua. Los otros discípulos llegaron en la barca, arrastrando la red con los pescados, pues no distaban de tierra más de cien metros.
Tan pronto como saltaron a tierra, vieron unas brasas y sobre ellas un pescado y pan. Jesús les dijo: “Traigan algunos pescados de los que acaban de pescar”. Entonces Simón Pedro subió a la barca y arrastró hasta la orilla la red, repleta de pescados grandes. Eran ciento cincuenta y tres, y a pesar de que eran tantos, no se rompió la red. Luego les dijo Jesús: “Vengan a comer”. Y ninguno de los discípulos se atrevía a preguntarle: ‘¿Quién eres?’, porque ya sabían que era el Señor. Jesús se acercó, tomó el pan y se lo dio y también el pescado. Esta fue la tercera vez que Jesús se apareció a sus discípulos después de resucitar de entre los muertos.

Habiendo resucitado al amanecer del primer día de la semana, Jesús se apareció primero a María Magdalena, de la que había arrojado siete demonios. Ella fue a llevar la noticia a los discípulos, los cuales estaban llorando, agobiados por la tristeza; pero cuando la oyeron decir que estaba vivo y que lo había visto, no le creyeron. Después de esto, se apareció en otra forma a dos discípulos, que iban de camino hacia una aldea.
También ellos fueron a anunciarlo a los demás; pero tampoco a ellos les creyeron. Por último, se apareció Jesús a los Once, cuando estaban a la mesa, y les echó en cara su incredulidad y dureza de corazón, porque no les habían creído a los que lo habían visto resucitado. Jesús les dijo entonces: “Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda creatura”.

At that time, Jesus appeared again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. This is how he appeared: Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They replied, “We will come with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
At dawn, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize him. Jesus said to them, “Children, have you caught anything?” They answered, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” So they cast it, and were not able to pull it in because of the quantity of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he tucked in his outer garment (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the shore, only about a hundred yards.
When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire with fish on it and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you just caught.” Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net ashore, full of large fish, one hundred fifty-three in all; yet the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come, have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread, and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after rising from the dead.

Having risen early on the first day of the week, Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom he had cast out seven demons. She went and told the disciples, who were mourning and weeping. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe it. After this, he appeared in another form to two of them as they were walking into the country.
They too went and reported it to the others; but they did not believe them either. Finally, Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were at table and rebuked them for their lack of faith and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who had seen him after he had risen. Then Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.”

Al anochecer del día de la resurrección, estando cerradas las puertas de la casa donde se hallaban los discípulos, por miedo a los judíos, se presentó Jesús en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz esté con ustedes”. Dicho esto, les mostró las manos y el costado. Cuando los discípulos vieron al Señor, se llenaron de alegría. De nuevo les dijo Jesús: “La paz esté con ustedes. Como el Padre me ha enviado, así también los envío yo”.
Después de decir esto, sopló sobre ellos y les dijo: “Reciban el Espíritu Santo. A los que les perdonen los pecados, les quedarán perdonados; y a los que no se los perdonen, les quedarán sin perdonar”. Tomás, uno de los Doce, a quien llamaban el Gemelo, no estaba con ellos cuando vino Jesús, y los otros discípulos le decían: “Hemos visto al Señor”. Pero él les contestó: “Si no veo en sus manos la señal de los clavos y si no meto mi dedo en los agujeros de los clavos y no meto mi mano en su costado, no creeré”.
Ocho días después, estaban reunidos los discípulos a puerta cerrada y Tomás estaba con ellos. Jesús se presentó de nuevo en medio de ellos y les Domingo Abril 12 dijo: “La paz esté con ustedes”. Luego le dijo a Tomás: “Aquí están mis manos; acerca tu dedo. Trae acá tu mano, métela en mi costado y no sigas dudando, sino cree”. Tomás le respondió: “¡Señor mío y Dios mío!” Jesús añadió: “Tú crees porque me has visto; dichosos los que creen sin haber visto”. Otras muchas señales milagrosas hizo Jesús en presencia de sus discípulos, pero no están escritas en este libro. Se escribieron éstas para que ustedes crean que Jesús es el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios, y para que, creyendo, tengan vida en su nombre.

Había un fariseo llamado Nicodemo, hombre principal entre los judíos, que fue de noche a ver a Jesús y le dijo: “Maestro, sabemos que has venido de parte de Dios, como maestro; porque nadie puede hacer las señales milagrosas que tú haces, si Dios no está con él”. Jesús le contestó: “Yo te aseguro que quien no renace de lo alto, no puede ver el Reino de Dios”. Nicodemo le preguntó: “¿Cómo puede nacer un hombre siendo ya viejo? ¿Acaso puede, por segunda vez, entrar en el vientre de su madre y volver a nacer?”
Le respondió Jesús: “Yo te aseguro que el que no nace del agua y del Espíritu, no puede entrar en el Reino de Dios. Lo que nace de la carne, es carne; lo que nace del Espíritu, es espíritu. On the evening of the day of the resurrection, with the doors of the house where the disciples were gathered locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they rejoiced. Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
After saying this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. The other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he answered, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the nail marks, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
Eight days later, the disciples were together again, and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, stood among them, and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Here are my hands; put your finger here, and bring your hand and place it in my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “You believe because you have seen me; blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Many other miraculous signs Jesus performed in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. These are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

There was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a ruler among the Jews. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can perform these signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born anew from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God.” Nicodemus asked him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. “Tanto amó Dios al mundo, que le entregó a su Hijo único, para que todo el que crea en él no perezca, sino que tenga la vida eterna. El que cree en él no será condenado; pero el que no cree ya está condenado por no haber creído en el Hijo único de Dios. La causa de la condenación es ésta: habiendo venido la luz al mundo, los hombres prefirieron las tinieblas a la luz, porque sus obras eran malas. Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 6, 1-15
En aquel tiempo, Jesús se fue a la otra orilla del mar de Galilea o lago de Tiberíades. Lo seguía mucha gente, porque habían visto las señales milagrosas que hacía curando a los enfermos. Jesús subió al monte y se sentó allí con sus discípulos. Estaba cerca la Pascua, festividad de los judíos. Viendo Jesús que mucha gente lo seguía, le dijo a Felipe: “¿Cómo compraremos pan para que coman éstos?” Le hizo esta pregunta para ponerlo a prueba, pues él bien sabía lo que iba a hacer. Felipe le respondió: “Ni doscientos denarios de pan bastarían para que a cada uno le tocara un pedazo de pan”. Otro de sus discípulos, Andrés, el hermano de Simón Pedro, le dijo: “Aquí hay un muchacho que trae cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados. Pero, ¿qué es eso para tanta gente?” Jesús le respondió: “Díganle a la gente que se siente”. En aquel lugar había mucha hierba. Todos, pues, se sentaron ahí; y tan sólo los hombres eran unos cinco mil.
Enseguida tomó Jesús los panes, y después de dar gracias a Dios, se los fue repartiendo a los que se habían sentado a comer. Igualmente les fue dando de los pescados todo lo que quisieron. Después de que todos se saciaron, dijo a sus discípulos: “Recojan los pedazos sobrantes, para que no se desperdicien”. Los recogieron y con los pedazos que sobraron de los cinco panes llenaron doce canastos. Entonces la gente, al ver la señal milagrosa que Jesús había hecho, decía: “Este es, en verdad, el profeta que habría de venir al mundo”. Pero Jesús, sabiendo que iban a llevárselo para proclamarlo rey, se retiró de nuevo a la montaña, él solo.

Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint John 6, 1-15
At that time, Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, or the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd followed him because they had seen the miraculous signs he had performed in healing the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. The Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. Seeing the large crowd following him, he said to Philip: “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat?” He asked this to test him, for he already knew what he was going to do. Philip answered, “Even two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each to have a piece.” Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what is that for so many people?” Jesus replied, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place. So the people sat down, and there were about five thousand men alone.
Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks to God, he distributed them to those who were seated. He did the same with the fish, giving them all they wanted. After everyone was satisfied, he said to his disciples, “Gather the leftover pieces, so that nothing is wasted.” They collected them, and the leftovers from the five loaves filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the miraculous sign Jesus had performed, they said, “This truly is the prophet who is to come into the world.” But Jesus, knowing they intended to take him and make him king, withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Al atardecer del día de la multiplicación de los panes, los discípulos de Jesús bajaron al lago, se embarcaron y empezaron a atravesar hacia Cafarnaúm. Ya había caído la noche y Jesús todavía no los había alcanzado. Soplaba un viento fuerte y las aguas del lago se iban encrespando. Cuando habían avanzado unos cinco o seis kilómetros, vieron a Jesús caminando sobre las aguas, acercándose a la barca, y se asustaron. Pero él les dijo: “Soy yo, no tengan miedo”. Ellos quisieron recogerlo a bordo y rápidamente la barca tocó tierra en el lugar a donde se dirigían.

El mismo día de la resurrección, iban dos de los discípulos hacia un pueblo llamado Emaús, situado a unos once kilómetros de Jerusalén, y comentaban todo lo que había sucedido. Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús se les acercó y comenzó a caminar con ellos; pero los ojos de los dos discípulos estaban velados y no lo reconocieron. El les preguntó: “¿De qué cosas vienen hablando, tan llenos de tristeza?”
Uno de ellos, llamado Cleofás, le respondió: “¿Eres tú el único forastero que no sabe lo que ha sucedido estos días en Jerusalén?” El les preguntó: “¿Qué cosa?” Ellos le respondieron: “Lo de Jesús el nazareno, que era un profeta poderoso en obras y palabras, ante Dios y ante todo el pueblo. Cómo los sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes lo entregaron para que lo condenaran a muerte, y lo crucificaron. Nosotros esperábamos que él sería el libertador de Israel, y sin embargo, han pasado ya tres días desde que estas cosas sucedieron. Es cierto que algunas mujeres de nuestro grupo nos han desconcertado, pues fueron de madrugada al sepulcro, no encontraron el cuerpo y llegaron contando que se les habían aparecido unos ángeles, que les dijeron que estaba vivo. Algunos de nuestros compañeros fueron al sepulcro y hallaron todo como habían dicho las mujeres, pero a él no lo vieron”.
Entonces Jesús les dijo: “¡Qué insensatos son ustedes y qué duros de corazón para creer todo lo anunciado por los profetas! ¿Acaso no era necesario que el Mesías padeciera todo esto y así entrara en su gloria?” Y comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo con todos los profetas, les explicó todos los pasajes de la Escritura que se referían a él.
Ya cerca del pueblo a donde se dirigían, él hizo como que iba más lejos; pero ellos le insistieron, diciendo: “Quédate con nosotros, porque ya es tarde y pronto va a oscurecer”. Y entró para quedarse con ellos. Cuando estaban a la mesa, tomó un pan, pronunció la bendición, lo partió y se lo dio. Entonces se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron, pero él se les desapareció. Y ellos se decían el uno al otro: “¡Con razón nuestro corazón ardía, mientras nos hablaba por el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras!” Se levantaron inmediatamente y regresaron a Jerusalén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once con sus compañeros, los cuales les dijeron: “De veras ha resucitado el Señor y se le ha aparecido a Simón”. Entonces ellos contaron lo que les había pasado por el camino y cómo lo habían reconocido al partir el pan.

When they had gone about five or six kilometers, they saw Jesus walking on the water, approaching the boat, and they were frightened. But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” They wanted to take him aboard, and immediately the boat reached the place they were heading.

On the same day of the Resurrection, two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, discussing all that had happened. As they talked and debated, Jesus approached and began walking with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along, so sad?”
One of them, named Cleopas, answered, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” He asked, “What things?” They replied, “About Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. How the chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. We had hoped he was the one to redeem Israel, but three days have now passed since these things happened. Some women from our group amazed us; they went to the tomb early in the morning, did not find his body, and came saying they had seen angels who told them he was alive. Some of our companions went to the tomb and found things just as the women had said, but they did not see him.”
Then Jesus said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
As they approached the village to which they were going, he acted as if he were going farther, but they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” They got up at once and returned to Jerusalem, where they found the Eleven and their companions gathered together. They told them what had happened on the road and how they had recognized him in the breaking of the bread.

Después de la multiplicación de los panes, cuando Jesús dio de comer a cinco mil hombres, sus discípulos lo vieron caminando sobre el lago. Al día siguiente, la multitud, que estaba en la otra orilla del lago, se dio cuenta de que allí no había más que una sola barca y de que Jesús no se había embarcado con sus discípulos, sino que éstos habían partido solos. En eso llegaron otras barcas desde Tiberíades al lugar donde la multitud había comido el pan. Cuando la gente vio que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, se embarcaron y fueron a Cafarnaúm para buscar a Jesús.
Al encontrarlo en la otra orilla del lago, le preguntaron: “Maestro, ¿cuándo llegaste acá?” Jesús les contestó: “Yo les aseguro que ustedes no me andan buscando por haber visto señales milagrosas, sino por haber comido de aquellos panes hasta saciarse. No trabajen por ese alimento que se acaba, sino por el alimento que dura para la vida eterna y que les dará el Hijo del hombre; porque a éste, el Padre Dios lo ha marcado con su sello”. Ellos le dijeron: “¿Qué necesitamos para llevar a cabo las obras de Dios?” Respondió Jesús: “La obra de Dios consiste en que crean en aquel a quien él ha enviado”.

Jesús les respondió: “Yo les aseguro: No fue Moisés quien les dio pan del cielo; es mi Padre quien les da el verdadero pan del cielo. Porque el pan de Dios es aquel que baja del cielo y da la vida al mundo”. Entonces le dijeron: “Señor, danos siempre de ese pan”. Jesús les contestó: “Yo soy el pan de la vida. El que viene a mí no tendrá hambre, y el que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed”.

After the multiplication of the loaves, when Jesus had fed five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the lake. The next day, the crowd on the other side of the lake realized that there was only one boat there and that Jesus had not embarked with his disciples, but that they had gone alone. At that moment, other boats came from Tiberias to the place where the crowd had eaten the bread. When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum to look for Jesus.
When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Teacher, when did you get here?” Jesus answered, “I assure you, you are not seeking me because you saw signs, but because you ate the bread and were filled. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you; for him, the Father, God, has set his seal.” They said to him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: that you believe in the one he has sent.”

For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” Jesus answered, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a la multitud: “Yo soy el pan de la vida. El que viene a mí no tendrá hambre, y el que cree en mí nunca tendrá sed. Pero como ya les he dicho: me han visto y no creen. Todo aquel que me da el Padre viene hacia mí; y al que viene a mí yo no lo echaré fuera, porque he bajado del cielo, no para hacer mi voluntad, sino la voluntad del que me envió. Y la voluntad del que me envió es que yo no pierda nada de lo que él me ha dado, sino que lo resucite en el último día. La voluntad de mi Padre consiste en que todo el que vea al Hijo y crea en él, tenga vida eterna y yo lo resucite en el último día”.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los judíos: “Nadie puede venir a mí, si no lo atrae el Padre, que me ha enviado; y a ése yo lo resucitaré el último día. Está escrito en los profetas: Todos serán discípulos de Dios. Todo aquel que escucha al Padre y aprende de él, se acerca a mí. No es que alguien haya visto al Padre, fuera de aquel que procede de Dios. Ese sí ha visto al Padre. Yo les aseguro: el que cree en mí, tiene vida eterna. Yo soy el pan de la vida. Sus padres comieron el maná en el desierto y sin embargo, murieron. Este es el pan que ha bajado del cielo para que, quien lo coma, no muera. Yo soy el pan vivo que ha bajado del cielo; el que coma de este pan vivirá para siempre, y el pan que yo les voy a dar es mi carne para que el mundo tenga vida”.

En aquel tiempo, los judíos se pusieron a discutir entre sí: “¿Cómo puede éste darnos a comer su carne?” Jesús les dijo: “Yo les aseguro: Si no comen la carne del Hijo del hombre y no beben su sangre, no podrán tener vida en ustedes. El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, tiene vida eterna y yo lo resucitaré el último día. Mi carne es verdadera comida y mi sangre es verdadera bebida. El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre, permanece en mí y yo en él. Como el Padre, que me ha enviado, posee la vida y yo vivo por él, así también el que me come vivirá por mí. Este es el pan que ha bajado del cielo; no es como el maná que comieron sus padres, pues murieron. El que come de este pan vivirá para siempre”. Esto lo dijo Jesús enseñando en la sinagoga de Cafarnaúm.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Marcos 16, 15-20
En aquel tiempo, se apareció Jesús a los Once y les dijo: “Vayan por todo el mundo y prediquen el Evangelio a toda creatura. El que crea y se bautice, se salvará; el que se resista a creer, será condenado. Estos son los milagros que acompañarán a los que hayan creído: arrojarán demonios en mi nombre, hablarán lenguas nuevas, cogerán serpientes en sus manos, y si beben un veneno mortal, no les hará daño; impondrán las manos a los enfermos y éstos quedarán sanos”. El Señor Jesús, después de hablarles, subió al cielo y está sentado a la derecha de Dios. Ellos fueron y proclamaron el Evangelio por todas partes, y el Señor actuaba con ellos y confirmaba su predicación con los milagros que hacían.

At that time, the Jews began to argue among themselves: “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them: “I assure you: unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them on the last day. My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the Father, who sent me, has life in himself and I live because of him, so the one who eats me will live because of me. At that time, Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: “Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever refuses to believe will be condemned. These are the signs that will accompany those who have believed: they will cast out demons in my name, speak in new tongues, pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” After speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and seated at the right hand of God. They went out and preached the Gospel everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed their message by the signs that accompanied it.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los judíos: “Yo les aseguro: el que es fiel a mis palabras no morirá para siempre”. Los judíos le dijeron: “Ahora ya no nos cabe duda de que estás endemoniado. Porque Abraham murió y los profetas también murieron, y tú dices: ‘El que es fiel a mis palabras no morirá para siempre’. ¿Acaso eres tú más que nuestro padre Abraham, el cual murió? Los profetas también murieron. ¿Quién pretendes ser tú?” Contestó Jesús: “Si yo me glorificara a mí mismo, mi gloria no valdría nada. El que me glorifica es mi Padre, aquel de quien ustedes dicen: ‘Es nuestro Dios’, aunque no lo conocen. Yo, en cambio, sí lo conozco; y si dijera que no lo conozco, sería tan mentiroso como ustedes. Pero yo lo conozco y soy fiel a su palabra. Abraham, el padre de ustedes, se regocijaba con el pensamiento de verme; me vio y se alegró por ello”. Los judíos le replicaron: “No tienes ni cincuenta años, ¿y has visto a Abraham?” Les respondió Jesús: “Yo les aseguro que desde antes que naciera Abraham, Yo Soy”. Entonces recogieron piedras para arrojárselas, pero Jesús se ocultó y salió del templo.

En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús terminó de hablar, los judíos
cogieron piedras para apedrearlo. Jesús les dijo: “He
realizado ante ustedes muchas obras buenas de parte del Padre,
¿por cuál de ellas me quieren apedrear?” Le contestaron los
judíos: “No te queremos apedrear por ninguna obra buena, sino
por blasfemo, porque tú, no siendo más que un hombre,
pretendes ser Dios”. Jesús les replicó: “¿No está escrito en
su ley: Yo les he dicho: Ustedes son dioses? Ahora bien, si
ahí se llama dioses a quienes fue dirigida la palabra de Dios
(y la Escritura no puede equivocarse), ¿cómo es que a mí, a
quien el Padre consagró y envió al mundo, me llaman blasfemo
porque he dicho: ‘Soy Hijo de Dios’? Si no hago las obras de
mi Padre, no me crean.
Pero si las hago, aunque no me crean a mí, crean a las obras,
para que puedan comprender que el Padre está en mí y yo en el
Padre”. Trataron entonces de apoderarse de él, pero se les
escapó de las manos. Luego regresó Jesús al otro lado del
Jordán, al lugar donde Juan había bautizado en un principio y
se quedó allí. Muchos acudieron a él y decían: “Juan no hizo
ninguna señal prodigiosa; pero todo lo que Juan decía de éste,
era verdad”. Y muchos creyeron en él allí.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 11, 45-56
En aquel tiempo, muchos de los judíos que habían ido a casa de
Marta y María, al ver que Jesús había resucitado a Lázaro,
creyeron en él. Pero algunos de entre ellos fueron a ver a los
fariseos y les contaron lo que había hecho Jesús. Entonces los
sumos sacerdotes y los fariseos convocaron al sanedrín y
decían: “¿Qué será bueno hacer? Ese hombre está haciendo
muchos prodigios. Si lo dejamos seguir así, todos van a creer
en él, van a venir los romanos y destruirán nuestro templo y
nuestra nación”.
Pero uno de ellos, llamado Caifás, que era sumo sacerdote
aquel año, les dijo: “Ustedes no saben nada. No comprenden que
conviene que un solo hombre muera por el pueblo y no que toda
la nación perezca”. Sin embargo, esto no lo dijo por sí mismo,
sino que, siendo sumo sacerdote aquel año, profetizó que Jesús
iba a morir por la nación, y no sólo por la nación, sino
también para congregar en la unidad a los hijos de Dios, que
estaban dispersos. Por lo tanto, desde aquel día tomaron la
decisión de matarlo. Por esta razón, Jesús ya no andaba
públicamente entre los judíos, sino que se retiró a la ciudad
de Efraín, en la región contigua al desierto y allí se quedó
con sus discípulos. Se acercaba la Pascua de los judíos y
muchos de las regiones circunvecinas llegaron a Jerusalén
antes de la Pascua, para purificarse. Buscaban a Jesús en el
templo y se decían unos a otros: “¿Qué pasará? ¿No irá a venir
para la fiesta?”

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Mateo 21, 1-11
Cuando se aproximaban ya a Jerusalén, al llegar a Betfagé,
junto al monte de los Olivos, envió Jesús a dos de sus
discípulos, diciéndoles: “Vayan al pueblo que ven allí
enfrente; al entrar, encontrarán amarrada una burra y un
burrito con ella; desátenlos y tráiganmelos. Si alguien les
pregunta algo, díganle que el Señor los necesita y enseguida
los devolverá”. Esto sucedió para que se cumplieran las
palabras del profeta: Díganle a la hija de Sión: He aquí que
tu rey viene a ti, apacible y montado en un burro, en un
burrito, hijo de animal de yugo.
Fueron, pues, los discípulos e hicieron lo que Jesús les había
encargado y trajeron consigo la burra y el burrito. Luego
pusieron sobre ellos sus mantos y Jesús se sentó encima. La
gente, muy numerosa, extendía sus mantos por el camino;
algunos cortaban ramas de los árboles y las tendían a su paso.
Los que iban delante de él y los que lo seguían gritaban:
“¡Hosanna! ¡Viva el Hijo de David! ¡Bendito el que viene en
nombre del Señor! ¡Hosanna en el cielo!” Al entrar Jesús en
Jerusalén, toda la ciudad se conmovió. Unos decían: “¿Quién es
éste?” Y la gente respondía: “Este es el profeta Jesús, de
Nazaret de Galilea”.

Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 12, 1-11
Seis días antes de la Pascua, fue Jesús a Betania, donde vivía
Lázaro, a quien había resucitado de entre los muertos. Allí le
ofrecieron una cena; Marta servía y Lázaro era uno de los que
estaban con él a la mesa. María tomó entonces una libra de
perfume de nardo auténtico, muy costoso, le ungió a Jesús los
pies con él y se los enjugó con su cabellera, y la casa se
llenó con la fragancia del perfume.
Entonces Judas Iscariote, uno de los discípulos, el que iba a
entregar a Jesús, exclamó: “¿Por qué no se ha vendido ese
perfume en trescientos denarios para dárselos a los pobres?”
Esto lo dijo, no porque le importaran los pobres, sino porque
era ladrón, y como tenía a su cargo la bolsa, robaba lo que
echaban en ella. Entonces dijo Jesús: “Déjala. Esto lo tenía
guardado para el día de mi sepultura; porque a los pobres los
tendrán siempre con ustedes, pero a mí no siempre me tendrán”.
Mientras tanto, la multitud de judíos, que se enteró de que
Jesús estaba allí, acudió, no sólo por Jesús, sino también
para ver a Lázaro, a quien el Señor había resucitado de entre
los muertos. Los sumos sacerdotes deliberaban para matar a
Lázaro, porque a causa de él, muchos judíos se separaban y
creían en Jesús.

En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús estaba a la mesa con sus
discípulos, se conmovió profundamente y declaró: “Yo les
aseguro que uno de ustedes me va a entregar”. Los discípulos
se miraron perplejos unos a otros, porque no sabían de quién
hablaba. Uno de ellos, al que Jesús tanto amaba, se hallaba
reclinado a su derecha. Simón Pedro le hizo una seña y le
preguntó: “¿De quién lo dice?” Entonces él, apoyándose en el
pecho de Jesús, le preguntó: “Señor, ¿quién es?” Le contestó
Jesús: “Aquel a quien yo le dé este trozo de pan, que voy a
mojar”. Mojó el pan y se lo dio a Judas, hijo de Simón el
Iscariote; y tras el bocado, entró en él Satanás.
Jesús le dijo entonces a Judas: “Lo que tienes que hacer,
hazlo pronto”. Pero ninguno de los comensales entendió a qué
se refería; algunos supusieron que, como Judas tenía a su
cargo la bolsa, Jesús le había encomendado comprar lo
necesario para la fiesta o dar algo a los pobres. Judas,
después de tomar el bocado, salió inmediatamente. Era de
noche. Una vez que Judas se fue, Jesús dijo: “Ahora ha sido
glorificado el Hijo del hombre y Dios ha sido glorificado en
él. Si Dios ha sido glorificado en él, también Dios lo
glorificará en sí mismo y pronto lo glorificará. Hijitos,
todavía estaré un poco con ustedes. Me buscarán, pero como les
dije a los judíos, así se lo digo a ustedes ahora: ‘A donde yo
voy, ustedes no pueden ir’ ”. Simón Pedro le dijo: “Señor, ¿a
dónde vas?” Jesús le respondió: “A donde yo voy, no me puedes
seguir ahora; me seguirás más tarde”. Pedro replicó: “Señor,
¿por qué no puedo seguirte ahora? Yo daré mi vida por ti”.
Jesús le contestó: “Conque darás tu vida por mí, Yo te aseguro
que no cantará el gallo, antes de que me hayas negado tres
veces”.

From the holy Gospel according to Saint John 8:1–11
At that time, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, and at dawn
he returned to the temple, where the crowd gathered around
him; and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and
Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery and, placing her
before him, said: “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very
act of adultery. Moses commanded in the law that such women be
stoned. What do you say?” They asked this to trap him and
accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with
his finger.
As they persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said:
“Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to
throw a stone at her.” He bent down again and continued
writing on the ground. Upon hearing this, the accusers began
to leave one by one, starting with the elders, until Jesus was
left alone with the woman standing before him. Then Jesus
straightened up and asked her: “Woman, where are your
accusers? Has no one condemned you?” She replied: “No one,
Lord.” Jesus said: “Neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave
your life of sin.”

At that time, Jesus said to the Jews: “I am going away, and
you will seek me, but you will die in your sins. Where I am
going, you cannot come.” The Jews said: “Is he intending to
commit suicide, and is that why he says, ‘Where I am going,
you cannot come’?” But Jesus said: “You are from below; I am
from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I
have told you that you will die in your sins, for unless you
believe that I Am, you will die in your sins.” They asked him:
“Who are you then?” Jesus answered: “What I have been telling
you from the beginning. I have much to say about you and to
judge. The one who sent me is truthful, and what I have heard
from him I speak to the world.” They did not realize that he
was speaking of the Father.
Jesus continued: “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then
you will know that I Am, and that I do nothing on my own, but
speak just what the Father taught me. The one who sent me is
with me; he has not left me alone, because I always do what
pleases him.” Many believed in him after these words.

At that time, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in
Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man of the
house of David, named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary. The
angel went to her and said: “Greetings, favored one! The Lord
is with you.” She was greatly troubled by his words and
wondered what kind of greeting this might be.
The angel said: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found
favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and
you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called
the Son of the Most High; the Lord God will give him the
throne of David his father, and he will reign over the house
of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Mary asked the angel: “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and
the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the
child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. Even your
relative Elizabeth has conceived a son in her old age, and she
who was called barren is in her sixth month, for nothing is
impossible for God.” Mary said: “I am the Lord’s servant. May
it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel
departed from her.

At that time, Jesus said to the Jews: “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death.” The Jews said: “Now we know that you are possessed by a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets also died, and you say: ‘Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.’ Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets also died. Who do you claim to be?” Jesus answered: “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God,’ yet you do not know him. I know him, and if I said I do not, I would be a liar like you. But I know him and keep his word. Abraham, your father, rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad.” The Jews said: “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them: “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I Am.” Then they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

At that time, when Jesus had finished speaking, the Jews
picked up stones to stone him. Jesus said to them: “I have
shown you many good works from the Father; for which of these
do you want to stone me?” The Jews answered: “We do not want
to stone you for any good work, but for blasphemy, because
you, being a man, make yourself God.” Jesus replied: “Is it
not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’? If those to
whom the word of God came are called ‘gods’ (and Scripture
cannot be broken), how can you say I blaspheme because I said,
‘I am the Son of God’? If I do not do the works of my Father,
do not believe me.
But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe
the works, so that you may know that the Father is in me and I
am in the Father.” They tried to seize him, but he escaped
their hands. Jesus went again across the Jordan to the place
where John had first been baptizing, and there many came to
him. They said: “John did no miraculous sign, but everything
he said about this man was true,” and many believed in him
there.

From the holy Gospel according to Saint John 11:45–56
At that time, many of the Jews who had come to Martha and
Mary’s house, seeing that Jesus had raised Lazarus from the
dead, believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees
and told them what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and
Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said: “What are we to do?
This man performs many miracles. If we let him go on like
this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come
and destroy our temple and nation.”
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year,
said: “You do not understand anything! You do not realize that
it is better for one man to die for the people than for the
whole nation to perish.” He did not say this on his own, but
as high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die
for the nation, and not only for the nation but also to gather
into one the children of God who are scattered. From that day
on, they plotted to kill him. Therefore, Jesus no longer
walked openly among the Jews, but went to the town of Ephraim
in the region near the wilderness, and there he stayed with
his disciples. The Jewish Passover was near, and many went up
from the surrounding regions to Jerusalem before the Passover
to purify themselves. They were seeking Jesus and asking one
another, “What will happen? Will he not come to the feast?”

From the holy Gospel according to Saint Matthew 21:1–11
As they approached Jerusalem, when they came to Bethphage near
the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying:
“Go to the village ahead of you; as you enter it, you will
find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring
them to me. If anyone asks you, say that the Lord needs them,
and he will send them back immediately.” This happened to
fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: Tell the daughter of
Zion, ‘Behold, your king comes to you, humble, and mounted on
a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’
The disciples went and did as Jesus commanded and brought the
donkey and colt. They laid their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat
on them. The crowds that went ahead and followed shouted:
“Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the highest!” When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the
whole city was stirred, asking: “Who is this?” The crowd
answered: “This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth of
Galilee.”

From the holy Gospel according to Saint John 12:1–11
Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where
Lazarus lived, whom he had raised from the dead. They gave a
dinner for him there; Martha served, and Lazarus was one of
those reclining with him at the table. Mary took a pound of
expensive nard perfume, anointed Jesus’ feet with it, and
wiped them with her hair, and the house was filled with the
fragrance of the perfume.
Then Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples, the one who was
going to betray him, said: “Why was this perfume not sold for
three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” He said this,
not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief
and had the money bag, and he used to steal what was put into
it. Jesus said: “Leave her alone. She has kept this for the
day of my burial. For you always have the poor with you, but
you will not always have me.” Meanwhile, a large crowd of Jews
had learned that Jesus was there and came, not only for Jesus
but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. The
chief priests planned to put Lazarus to death, because many
were turning away from the Jews and believing in Jesus on
account of him.

From the holy Gospel according to Saint John 13:21–33,36–38
At that time, when Jesus was at the table with his disciples,
he was deeply troubled and said: “Truly, I tell you, one of
you will betray me.” The disciples looked at one another,
puzzled, not knowing of whom he spoke. One of them, the
disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. Simon
Peter gestured to him and asked: “Who is he talking about?”
Leaning on Jesus’ chest, he asked him: “Lord, who is it?”
Jesus answered: “It is the one to whom I give this piece of
bread after I have dipped it.” He dipped the bread and gave it
to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot; and after the bite, Satan
entered him.
Jesus said to Judas: “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
No one at the table understood why he said this; some thought,
since Judas had the money bag, that Jesus was instructing him
to buy what was needed for the feast or give something to the
poor. Judas then took the piece of bread and went out
immediately. It was night. Once Judas was gone, Jesus said:
“Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God is glorified in him, God will glorify him in himself,
and soon. Little children, I am with you a little longer. You
will look for me, but as I told the Jews, so I tell you now:
‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’” Simon Peter asked him:
“Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied: “Where I am going,
you cannot follow me now; you will follow later.” Peter said:
“Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life
for you.” Jesus answered: “Will you lay down your life for me?
Truly, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.”
